What is an online course?
An online course is a course which is delivered entirely online meaning that there is no specific time in which you have to come to lecture.  However, there are ON-CAMPUS TESTS for all math online course at ELAC.

Even though you do not have to attend class at specific times, an online course is at least as time consuming as, and sometimes more time consuming than, a traditional class.   You will have homework, tests, quizzes, midterms, and final exam just like you do if you take a traditional class.  You can work on the material at times convenient to you.  It is an "anytime, anywhere" class; but remember, it must be "sometimes, somewhere".

Since there is no class meeting times, your communication with me and other students will be done mostly online: through e-mail, telephone, and Discussion Forum.

Is an online course for me?
An online course is suitable mostly for everyone with the following characteristics:

has an ability to read and follow directions very carefully because most content in an online class is learned through reading and following instructions.

has an expectation that an online class is as time consuming as a traditional class

has strong time management and self-discipline skills so that he or she can always keep up with the schedule.

has strong motivations to complete the course.

has acquired basic computer skills, such as reading and sending email, visiting a website, etc.

If you have the above characteristics, an online course is most likely suitable for you.  Some students really do well in this online

How do I study in an online course?
Since there is no lecture, each student learns the course material mostly on their own by reading the textbook,  doing online interactive exercises , doing homework, online quizzes, and take-home tests.  Before each on-campus test, there is usually a review session.  Please plan to attend the review session.

You are recommended to form a study group with your classmates.

What skills do I need in order to take this online course?
There is no specific skills required in this course.  It is desirable that you have strong time management and self-discipline skills as well as basic computer skills.

Is the course self-paced?
No, the course is not self-paced.  You can work at times convenient to you but you need to follow the deadlines.  For example: all the online quizzes have deadlines.  You can complete an online quiz anytime before its deadline.  Once the deadline is passed, the online quiz will be unavailable.

There will be on-campus midterms and final examination.  Please refer to the Syllabus for the exam schedule.

How does the online class work?
At home or work or in the Math tutoring lab, you will learn the course material by reading the textbook and doing online interactive exercises.  You will do your homework on paper (just like you do in a regular class).

Online, you need to take the online tests and quizzes.  You also need to interact with your classmates by posting your opinion, answer your classmates' questions in the Discussion Forum and E-mail.

You will have one or more on-campus midterm(s) and a final examination.

If you have a question, you can post your questions in the Discussion Forum, contact me by E-mail, or phone.  You can also go to Math Tutoring Lab or make an appointment to meet me in person.  I am usually available during my office hours listed in the Syllabus.

Are there any mandatory on-campus meetings?
Yes, there are FOUR mandatory on-campus meetings during the entire semester, usually on Saturdays (during Fall and Spring semesters).  There will be a mandatory orientation, at least two midterm exams, and a final exam.  Also, there are review sessions before each on-campus test.  It is very important not to miss any of the meetings.

Please consult the Syllabus for the schedule of mandatory and optional on-campus meetings.

Is the orientation meeting mandatory?
Yes, it is mandatory.  During this meeting, I will explain the procedure needed to login and navigate Course Compass and discuss important aspects of this class, which include requirements, method of evaluations, policies, resources available, and study tips.

What should I do if I am unable to come to any of the on-campus exams?
You need to let me know as soon as possible so that you can take the exam earlier than scheduled date.  If you take an exam on a later date, you will lose 5 points.

Note also that extra credits are available to students who take an exam on its scheduled date.  If you take an exam earlier or later, you forfeit your chance of getting extra credits.

Final exam is mandatory.  If you miss the final exam, you will get an "F".  No Incompletes are given.

How do I turn in the tests and homework assignments?
Homework is paper-based.  You need to write your homework just like you do in a regular math class.  Turn in the homework during each on campus examination.  The online quizzes will be automatically submitted to me.
