Steps to Get Started with the course

STEP 1:



 

Please come to the Mandatory Orientation for Online Students.  During the orientation you need to do the followings:

Sign in your name to record your attendance.

Pick up the Course Compass Access Code and Course ID Code.

STEP 2:








 

 

 

Please make sure that you buy the textbook and the Student Solution Manual by Tuesday of the first week (usually the book store runs out of this book).  

For Math 115 (Elementary Algebra):

Bittinger, Ellenbogen, Johnson, Elementary and Intermediate Algebra: Custom Edition for East Los Angeles College, Pearson Custom, 2003 (REQUIRED)

Student Solution Manual  for Elementary and Intermediate Algebra (REQUIRED)

For Math 227 (Statistics):

Triola, Elementary Statistics, 8th edition, Addison Wesley, 2001 (REQUIRED)

Student Solution Manual  for Elementary Statistics  (REQUIRED)

STEP 3:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Register for Course Compass online.  You need to register online before you can login to the course.  Before you go online to register, please make sure that you have the following items:
Valid email address
Course ID for your online course.  (The course ID will be given during the orientation).
Course Compass Student Access Code (The Student Access Code  will be given during the orientation).

Make sure that you have all the items before you go online.  Once a student has used this code to register, it cannot be used again.

Go online to register and log in at http://students.pearsoned.com  

You will choose your own username and password during the online registration process.  Please make sure that you remember your username and password.  You only need to register once.

Should you have any problems registering or logging in, please contact the Course Compass Tech Support  line: 1-800-677 -6337 CST (8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday).

STEP 4:

 

 

Login to Course Compass at http://students.pearsoned.com.  Use the username and password you have created during the online registration process in step 4.

STEP 5:

 

 

Read and print the FAQ, Getting Started, Syllabus and Calendar inside the Course Information Folder in Course Compass. 

STEP 6:
 

 

Navigate  Course Compass.  Please navigate Announcement, Course Information, Course Document, and Communication.  Click here for Instructions to Navigate Course Compass

STEP 7:

 

 

Do the Special Assignment (including Preliminary Quiz, Discussion Topic Introduction, and installing Browser Plug-ins) ASAPSpecial Assignment is available inside Course Documents.

 

 

 

 

Instructions on Login to Course Compass:

To login to Course Compass, you need to be connected to the internet.  It is recommended that you use Internet Explorer version 5.5 or later. 

IMPORTANT:  Course Compass is not compatible with American Online (AOL) Browser.  If you subscribe to AOL, you can connect to the internet using AOL.  Once you have the connection,  open Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator to access Course Compass.

Before you login, you need to register your student access code. Should you have any problems registering or logging in, please contact the Course Compass Tech Support  line: 1-800-677 -6337 CST (8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday).

 

 

 To register your access code:

Before you go online to register, please make sure that you have the following items:
Valid email address
Course ID for your online course.  (The course ID will be given during orientation).
Course Compass Student Access Code (The Student Access Code  will be given during the orientation).

 

 

Go to http://students.pearsoned.com after the orientation date, 10 a.m. 

 

 

Bookmark the site by clicking favorites and add to favorite.  Next time, you will be able to find the site just by clicking "Favorite" on the standard toolbar of your browser.

 

 

Click Register.

 

 

Enter your access code.

Enter the instructor's course ID.

Enter your contact info.  Please make sure to enter your VALID email address.
Enter your academic institution (East Los Angeles College).
Enter your login name and password.  Remember these items because I will not be able to retrieve your password.  Choose login name and password which you will remember easily.

 

 

Now you are ready to  "Login to Course Compass":

 

 

Go to http://students.pearsoned.com

 

 

Click Login.

 

 

Use your username and password you created during registration process whenever you login to Course Compass.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Instruction on Using Course Compass:

 

 

Login to Course Compass as described above.

 

 

Click on Math115-A.Siswanto, Math 125-A. Siswanto, or Math 227-A.Siswanto (depending on which class you register) to get to the class homepage. 

 

 

Print the Syllabus, Getting Started and Calendar inside the Course Information folder if you have not done so. 

 

 

Click each item in the class homepage: Announcement, Course Information, Course Document, Communication, Grade Book, etc.

 

 

 

Announcements

 

 

Announcement Board is on the class homepage. Read the Announcements at least twice a week.  Important announcements will be posted on the Announcement Board.

 

 

 

Course Compass Email:

 

 

 

 

 

You can send email through Course Compass, but to check your email, you need to login to your email server.  For example:  I have a Hotmail account.  To check my email,  I have to go to login to Hotmail server.  

Important:  All E-mail subject should contain the word  "Math115 Online" or "Math 227 Online" followed by the subject on the heading.  For example:  if you have a question about a test, then the on your email subject, you should write: "Math 115 Online Test Question".

It is important to write it down on the subject so that I can respond to it in a timely manner. because once the class starts, I may get 30 e-mails per day.  

 

 

 

Discussion Forum:  

 

 




 

Everyone in this class can read and make postings in the Discussion Forum.  You will need to click Discussion Forum in Course Compass to post your questions, read answers to your questions, post your introduction, and journals.  Everyone in this class can read the postings you make, so please make sure that you follow Netiquette when posting discussions.

The Discussion Forum is divided into several topics.  Please make sure that you post under appropriate topics.

Topic Q&A is a Forum for questions and answers for this class.

To create a posting,

Click on Discussion Forum then choose the topic by clicking on the topic that you want. 

Click "Add New Thread".

When you are done, click Submit

Your message will be posted and everybody in this class will be able to see it.

 

 

To reply to a posting, 

Just open the posting.

Click reply.

 

 

 

Online Quizzes: (inside Course Documents folder)

 

 

 

 

In order to take the online quizzes, you need to download all the plug-ins including InterAct Math plug-in, TestGen plug-in, and Java Virtual Machine.  You also need to adjust your display setting.  The instruction to download the plug-in is available in the Special Assignment under Course Information folder.   

The duration of each quiz is set to be unlimited so that  you have plenty of time to check your answer before you submit.  You can take an online quiz unlimited number of times by the due date and only the highest score counts.  Each time you take a quiz, you will get slightly different problems on the test. 

To take an online quiz,

 

 

Make sure that you have 2-3 hours set aside to take an online quiz.

 

 

Go inside the Course Document folder in Course Compass.  Click on Online Quizzes and choose the quiz you want to take.  Note that next to each quiz, you can see the due date.

 

 

Click Begin Quiz when you are ready to take the quiz.  

 

 

Click on the answer (either a, b c, or d).

 

 

Once you are done with a quiz, click finish to submit for grading (answer yes when prompted).  Make sure you have answered all the questions.

 

 

Important:  Make sure that you view your quiz results when prompted to make sure that the quiz is properly graded.  PRINT OUT THE GRADED QUIZ FOR YOUR OWN RECORD.

 

 

 

Grade Book:

 

 

You can see all grades by clicking the grade book in Course Compass.  All online quiz grades are automatically transferred to the grade book.
